🍷 Drinks & tanninsHow to remove green & black tea stains
Tannin stain · water before soap
Stains from brewed teas such as green tea, black tea or barley tea are tannin stains, just like coffee. Green tea may look faint right after a spill but turns yellow as it dries, while black tea is dark brown from the start. If it's milk tea, there's milk protein in it too, so cold water comes first.
🔬 Why this order works
The color in tea comes from tannins and pigments that dissolve easily in water, so a fresh stain mostly comes out with water alone. But contact with soap or heat tends to fix them in the fibers, and over time they oxidize and darken. Remove as much as possible with water, then break down the remaining color with oxygen bleach.
🧺 Step by step
Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.
👕 By fabric
Soaking in oxygen bleach removes most of it. If an old brown mark stubbornly remains, use diluted chlorine bleach as a last resort, but only if the care label allows chlorine bleaching.
After pre-treating with liquid detergent, use a color-safe oxygen bleach. Before soaking, test it on an inside seam to make sure the color doesn't run.
Blot and rinse with cold water, and use only a neutral wool detergent. Don't use bleach; if color remains, take it to a dry cleaner and tell them it's a tea stain.
🚫 Don't
- Rubbing in laundry soap or bar soap first — it tends to set the tannins.
- Hot water on milk tea — the milk protein cooks into the fabric.
- Letting it dry because it looks faint — green tea stains turn yellow as they dry.
⏳ If it has already dried
For a stain that has already turned yellow, apply liquid detergent and let it sit for about 30 minutes, then soak in oxygen bleach solution for a few hours or overnight. If it doesn't come out in one go, repeating the soak will fade it a lot.
💡 Tip
Even small drips from lifting out a tea bag leave yellow spots once dry. Dab on cold water and blot right away.
❓ Common questions
I'm not sure whether the yellow spot on my white shirt is a tea stain.
Tea is often nearly invisible when it dries and only shows up as yellow over time. When you don't know the cause, going cold water rinse → liquid detergent → oxygen bleach is safe even if it turns out to be a protein stain.
What about sweet tea drinks like bubble tea?
Sugar stays sticky when it dries and traps dirt, and it can turn brown with heat. Soak well in cold water to dissolve the sugar before using detergent.

General home methods. For valuable garments or unknown fabrics, take them to a dry cleaner and say what the stain is. Follow product labels for bleaches and solvents, ventilate, and never mix them.
